    By tradition, the Railway of the Month for August is an outdoor line: this month, John & Sue Cooke share with us their SM-32 system, the Meadowlands Light Railway, which runs around the garden at their home.

    The current northern terminus of the Dean Forest Railway is Parkend which James Hilton suggests would make a good layout for OO gauge, as he depicts with his own illustrations.

    This month the focus is on the four-wheel coaching stock of the Hull & Barnsley Railway, with drawings to 4mm scale of the five-compartment all third and three-compartment brake third, both representing stock built in the 1880s.

    Peter Osborne devised an ingenious sector plate for his latest OO project, one which can move in three dimensions to service a low level fiddle yard.

    This class of 24 4-4-0s, built in the Glasgow & South Western Railway works at Kilmarnock, were famed for their work on the hilly route to Greenock in particular. Drawings by W D Stewart, with accompanying text by Tim Rayner.

    Dent Station
    This location, the highest main line station in England amidst the scenic wonders of the Yorkshire Dales, marks in model form the completion of phase two of Ian Nuttall's mammoth project to model the Settle & Carlisle in the 1930s in OO.

    Marks Tey
    This Essex station marks the junction between the former Great Eastern Railway main line - which runs north-east from London to Suffolk and Norfolk - and the branch to Sudbury. Ian Stock considers its potential for modelling, both in the present day and the 1960s.

    The Glasgow & South Western had a trio of these locomotives, designed by Peter Drummond and used for shunting, as John Treays relates.

    The station serving this Ayrshire coastal resort is much rationalised and served by electric trains; its steam-age heyday, excursion trains and all, is studied by Stewart Clinton as a basis for a new layout project.

    Latterly kept alive by milk traffic, the terminus of the Culm Valley Light Railway in mid-Devon has been modelled in 4mm scale by Chris Lamacraft.

    Coalville Crossing
    A freight-orientated Midlands scheme employing two decks, recreating the heavy coal traffic which flowed through this unprepossessing Leicestershire town. It was designed by Ian Stock in his preferred N gauge.

    The North Eastern Railway built distinctive over-track signal boxes along the Newcastle to Carlisle line, and elements of several (chiefly Wylam) were used to create a 1:148 scale replica, as Peter Brown explains.
