RAILWAY MODELLER July 2026 Vol.77 No.909

£6.95
In the July 2026 issue of Railway Modeller, we are giving readers the chance to win an OO gauge limited edition Cavalex model of the Class 56 diesel locomotive that was named after Peco and Railway Modeller in 2016: for your chance to win, see page 571 of the magazine and answer one simple question via the Railway Modeller website.
Gracing the cover of the magazine is the new Manning Wardle L Class 0-6-0 saddle tank in OO gauge from Rapido Trains UK, with our sample depicting preserved example Matthew Murray and posed on a diorama representing part of the real locomotive's home line, the historic Middleton Railway in Leeds. Inside the magazine, we review the new model, and Callum Willcox describes how he constructed the diorama.
Railway of the Month is Lydbrook Dean, a superb OO gauge model of a freight-only branch line in the Forest of Dean – which, though not representing a real location, has perfectly captured the atmosphere of such half-forgotten byways towards the end of the British Railways steam era. Other layouts featured include an OO gauge model of Brent station and the Kingsbridge branch in Devon, housed inside a shipping container in Cyprus; Whittingly Hospital, an OO micro layout inspired by private railways serving mental hospitals, which was one of the finalists in the Peco RAIL200 Model Layout Competition; and Culthwaite, an N gauge exhibition layout based on the famous Settle & Carlisle line.
Constructional articles include a fleet of Class 121 and 122 'bubble car' diesel railcars in EM gauge; a 1:148 scale model of Bradford Cathedral, which will be on display in the real building this summer; and a Collett '9700' Class pannier tank in O gauge, created with a conversion kit for a Minerva Model Railways ready-to-run model. Simon Artymiuk also celebrates 75 years of the preserved Talyllyn Railway, a remarkable survivor that has inspired generations of narrow gauge modellers.
