Originally a war time structure, many of these have survived and found to have many different uses. This kit is a model of a typical GWR brick built signal box with a hipped roof, built between 1896 and 1921. In practice there were many small differences between individual signal boxes as they were often tailored to fit the location, a good example is on the South Devon Railway at Buckfastleigh. This kit replicates the precast concrete Southern Region example, often paired with the Concrete Hut (ref 518). A Fogman, when fog or snow reduced visibility, placed detonators on the rails ahead of signals or temporary speed restrictions imposed due to works etc. to provide additional warning to train drivers.
