After loading, open wagons were checked for height using this simple gauge to ensure that loads did not hit bridges etc. and therefore were usually placed near the yard exit.

Modelled on a hoist found at Plymouth Laira depot which is still in use today assisting with the maintenance of Locos and rolling stock. An Inspection Pit (Peco LK-56/156) was also often provided.The Rolling Underframe kit (Ref 546A) can be added to transform this unit into a movable crane. This model and the Engine Shed kit (Ref 522) make a good starting point for any layout in need of steam engine facilities.
