Originally a war time structure, many of these have survived and found to have many different uses. This kit is a model of a typical GWR brick built signal box with a hipped roof, built between 1896 and 1921. In practice there were many small differences between individual signal boxes as they were often tailored to fit the location, a good example is on the South Devon Railway at Buckfastleigh. This kit replicates the precast concrete Southern Region example, often paired with the Concrete Hut (ref 518). A Fogman, when fog or snow reduced visibility, placed detonators on the rails ahead of signals or temporary speed restrictions imposed due to works etc. to provide additional warning to train drivers. From the late 1960's the spread of shipping containers revolutionised the transport of goods. On the railways marshalling yards gave way to intermodal depots as containers are transferred between ships, trains and road vehicles.
