Railway Modeller releases the 900th issue of its much-loved publication

Britain’s best-selling model railway magazine, Railway Modeller, is this week publishing its 900th issue, marking a significant milestone in the history of the hobby, and publication itself.

Launched in October 1949 as a modest 32-page bi-monthly journal, Railway Modeller quickly grew in popularity, capturing the imagination of post-war readers, at a time when model railways were becoming a national pastime. By 1951, the title had moved to a monthly publication under the stewardship of model railway manufacturer and publishing house, PECO Model Railways. It has remained with the British publisher since, proving to be a consistent and trusted companion to generations of enthusiasts, as well as a collectors’ item in its own right.

Throughout its long history, Railway Modeller has showcased the very best in model railway layouts, innovation and craftsmanship, inspiring both hobbyists in the UK and around the world. From the pioneering editorial leadership of Cyril Freezer, through to the supervision of incumbent editor, Craig Tiley, the magazine has always remained true to its mission - to cover the full spectrum of the hobby and bring readers news, inspiration, and practical guidance.

The magazine’s journey mirrors the evolution of model railways themselves; from the paper shortages of the 1950s, through the explosion of colour and ready-to-run models in the 1970s and 80s, to the cutting-edge digital control systems and 3D-printed scenery of today. Each issue has been a time capsule of the hobby’s progress, chronicling both the changing landscape of railway modelling and the enduring passion of its practitioners.

Reaching the 900th issue is more than just a number; it is a testament to the loyalty of its readers, the creativity of contributors past and present, and the enduring magic of railways in miniature format. Few publications today can be proud of such longevity, and Railway Modeller remains a small beacon of stability and heritage, bringing pleasure and inspiration to tens of thousands of readers each and every month.

As the magazine looks to the future, it continues to innovate while honouring its heritage — ensuring that Railway Modeller remains, as ever, ‘at the heart of the hobby.’
