Hornby Announce 2021 Range! - Hornby 2021 Range Report - Railway Modeller - February 2021 Issue


Tuesday 5th January 2021 saw Hornby announce their 2021 range. Despite disruption in 2020, Hornby have been pressing ahead with several newly tooled items for 2021, as well as a whole host of new liveries and running numbers across the board.

The Range

Steam Locomotives

Topping the bill for steam-outline is the BR Standard 9F 2-10-0. This newly tooled model is set to cater for the various detail differences in the class, with the potential to replicate class member previously not produced in ready to run form.


The Gresley P2 Class 2-8-2 is also to receive the new tooling treatment. Unlike the previous version from 2014, this all new model will cover both the new build P2/1 “Princess of Wales”, as well as the P2/2 variants of the class, including samples with the iconic Bugatti nose.

The Greasley A1 and A3’s are set for an upgrade, with the addition of a die-cast running plate and firebox flicker.

Following the success of the centenary range in 2020, Hornby Dublo is set to make a return with three further die-cast models joining the brand, including Coronation Pacific “City of Leicester” and two air-smoothed merchant navy “Elders Fyffes” & General Steam Navigation.

The popular Stephenson Rocket also makes a return in an all new train pack, featuring a newly tooled Liverpool & Manchester Railway Royal Mail Coach, alongside two new coach packs, including the L&MR Flatbed wagon.

Diesel + Electric Locomotives

Diesel and electric enthusiast are to be treated to a plethora of new liveries, covering many popular releases including the Class 56, 60, 87 and much more.

ScotRail’s ‘Active Travel’ class 153 units are also set to join the range, with the models capturing the interrogate highland mural, as carried by the class.

Three new HST power car sets, alongside with batches of accompanying Mk3 coaches will also be release, including LNER Farwell Tour and eye-catching Midland Pullman, as well as two much requested train packs, the GWR Trainbow IET and Avanti Pride Pendolino. 

The popular Sentinel 0-4-0DM also makes a return to the range, including a variant re-tooled to replicate the refurbished example based at Hitichi’s depot in Ashford, Kent.

New tooling sees the addition of the Ruston 88DS, following in the footsteps of the diminutive 48DS released back in 2019. This all new model is due to be available selection of eye-catching private owner and BR liveries, and is sure to prove popular with the industrial enthusiast.

Rolling Stock

Following the announcement of the British Rail Class 91 in 2020, Hornby are set to release a whole range BR Mk4 trailers and DVT’s in accompanying liveries. The initial release will also cover Transport for Wales livery, to pair with the forthcoming Class 67.

Other new newly tooled rolling stock includes BR MK1 BCK’s, Maunsell Dining Saloons and SR Gangway Bogie Luggage vans.

However, one of the headlines of the 2021 range has to be the addition of a suite of generic four and six wheel coaches, covering an array of pre-grouping, big-four and nationalised liveries. These coaches will be available with or without Hornby’s new ‘MagLight’ lighting system, which will also be released as a standalone unit.
