75 years of Railway Modeller

Railway Modeller celebrates its 75th Anniversary and 888th issue!

Railway Modeller is celebrating a remarkable milestone this week – 75 years of continuous publication. Since its first issue in October 1949, Railway Modeller has grown to become one of the most respected and enduring publications in the world of railway modelling.

When G.P. Keen, Chairman of The Model Railway Club, welcomed readers to that first issue, few could have imagined that the magazine would still be thriving 75 years later. An even more impressive feat is that Railway Modeller has remained under the same ownership since 1951, when railway modelling manufacturer, PECO, acquired the title from Ian Allan Publishing. This consistency has been integral to the magazine's success, loyalty and enduring popularity among railway enthusiasts of all ages.

To mark this momentous occasion, Railway Modeller has created a special edition for its loyal subscribers. The cover of this commemorative issue has been designed in a retro 1950s style, paying homage to the magazine’s early years. Subscribers will find a unique black-and-white main image, evoking the charm of earlier editions. This nod to the past is a tribute to the magazine's rich heritage and the generations of readers who have supported it over the decades.

Inside, readers will find a special feature, which takes a fascinating look back at issues from 75, 50, and 25 years ago. This historical reflection showcases the evolution of both the magazine and the railway modelling hobby, highlighting the many developments that have shaped the community over the past three quarters of a century.

In conjunction with this anniversary, Railway Modeller is also drawing attention to its invaluable digital archive. Subscribers now have access to all 888 editions of the magazine through a fully searchable online platform. This archive is a treasure trove of track plans, drawings, and insights that continue to serve as an essential resource for both experienced and aspiring modellers.

The magazine in recent years has featured a number of famous railway modellers, including Jools Holland, Pete Waterman and Sir Rod Stewart. As Railway Modeller embarks on its next chapter, it remains committed to supporting, promoting and inspiring the railway modelling community - just as it has done for the past 75 years and hopefully many more...
