After loading, open wagons were checked for height using this simple gauge to ensure that loads did not hit bridges etc. and therefore were usually placed near the yard exit. The kit comprises a coaling stage, water tower with crane, and a hoist for loading the coal. This model and the Engine Shed kit (Ref 522) make a good starting point for any layout in need of steam engine facilities. Additional kits can be used to create multiple spans, whilst larger, busier stations often had 2 stairways to each platform, leading off in both directions. Detailing around the windows and doors and the inclusion of guttering and downpipes is noteworthy, as are the curtains in the window and the provision of additional dormers (house backs kit) and bay windows (house front kit), plus the optional pavement around the base.
