Ian Nuttall considers how grain traffic was carried during the period in which his OO gauge project Dentdale is set, with drawings of an LNER Dia 51 example, and a scratchbuilt LMS Dia 1689 model, rivets and all.

France is a land of rail contrasts; the popular image of a local train ambling through the countryside has long since given way to the smart, speedy TVG.

In places the landscape required impressive feats of civil engineering, even on the secondary routes, which meandered cross-country between the busy mainlines.

Nowadays unique tourist railways add to the appeal.
