The essential items for all stations until recently was a goods shed. Inside, dry goods were stored and transhipped from road to rail via the internal platform. From the late 1960's the spread of shipping containers revolutionised the transport of goods. On the railways marshalling yards gave way to intermodal depots as containers are transferred between ships, trains and road vehicles. Stations often had these Water Cranes at the end of the platforms so the locomotives could be refilled without detaching them from the train. Also included is a coke brazier, called a 'fire devil' to keep the cast iron pipe from freezing up during the winter.
