RM JULY 2018 ISSUE – Vol.69 NO.813
RAILWAY OF THE MONTH
Hemyock
Latterly kept alive by milk traffic, the terminus of the Culm Valley Light Railway in mid-Devon has been modelled in 4mm scale by Chris Lamacraft.
PLAN OF THE MONTH
Coalville Crossing
A freight-orientated Midlands scheme employing two decks, recreating the heavy coal traffic which flowed through this unprepossessing Leicestershire town. It was designed by Ian Stock in his preferred N gauge.
SCALE DRAWINGS
An NER-style elevated signal box
The North Eastern Railway built distinctive over-track signal boxes along the Newcastle to Carlisle line, and elements of several (chiefly Wylam) were used to create a 1:148 scale replica, as Peter Brown explains.
INSIDE THIS ISSUE
Barnsdale Junction
Husband-and-wife co-operation with a layout isn’t rare, but for this OO project by Julie & Tony Peckham things were different: she called the shots!
Wattisham & Combs
Mike Chester gives us a guided tour of this N gauge layout set in East Anglia in diesel and electric days, complete with a sugar beet factory scene.
Spirit of Swindon
Part 1: Will Heath introduces his grand retirement project – a representation of the heart of the Great Western Railway in N gauge, and set in the 1960s – with an overview of the layout and some of its buildings.
Nenthead Layout
Ordinarily, operations on Colin Brown’s LNER-period O gauge layout take place at the terminus in his purpose-built railway room, but come the fine weather and portable extensions, an extra fiddle yard and a couple of gazebos come into play.
Great Swilling
A 4mm scale Gloucestershire backwater on the banks of the River Severn on the former Midland, modelled in BR steam and diesel days by David Burnett.
Bulverhythe Pier
This OO gauge micro-layout perches on a shelf above a desk in Humphrey Atkinson’s modelling den; it represents a small harbour somewhere along the English Channel coast in the steam age.
