Loading Gauge

After loading, open wagons were checked for height using this simple gauge to ensure that loads did not hit bridges etc. and therefore were usually placed near the yard exit. Coal/Builders Merchant

Many merchants had private sidings where they could be supplied directly by rail. This kit includes office, loading platform, hoist and can be constructed in a number of ways. Round Water Tower

This common type of station water tower can be used either platform or ground mounted and is supplied with stove, drain, hose and etched ladder. The stove was used to stop the water freezing in the crane arm. Can also supply other platform mounted water cranes (Ratio Water Crane and Fire Devil Ref 212). Coal Depot

In the days when everything came by rail, even the smallest goods yard would provide a facility for the local coal merchant next to a siding. This kit can easily be extended by adding more staithes using Ratio Coal Staithes kit 316. Glue and paints required to complete this model. Footprint 66mm x 23mm

Carriage Shed

These were a common feature in sidings where repairs, cleaning and maintenance were effected. This shed will cover 2 tracks and can easily be extended; the kit includes guttering and centre walkway. Weighbridge Hut

Many goods yards had weigh bridges so that the 'carriage price' of a load to be carried by rail could be costed. Goods were then loaded into the goods shed. Kit includes guttering, brass etched scales and weighing plate, barge boards, window and door; glue and paints required to complete this model. Footprint: 30mm x 15mm.

Pump House/Boiler House

This versatile building would contain a boiler to provide steam either for a pump raising water or to generate electricity for a small factory. Sometimes a short siding was provided alongside for coal deliveries. Kit includes the main building, brick chimney, water tank and outbuilding. Oil Depot

Oil depot for distribution of domestic oil, which was transferred to road vehicles to deliver to domestic customers. Kit includes hut, base and pipe fittings and can easily be extended by using the Ratio Kit 315 Oil Tanks. Glue and paints required to complete this model. Footprint 80mm x 25mm

Signal Box Interior

Adds the finishing touches to any signal box (See Ratio 236 and Peco NB-3 kits); it contains all you need to fit out a typical signal box including a 20-lever frame and a level crossing operating wheel. Stone Goods Shed

Yard Crane

This basic crane is an essential for all station yards, often found inside goods sheds or on loading banks. Used to lift loads up to 1 ton, the boom can be swung round on its base to transfer goods from road to rail vehicles. Square Water Tower

This common type of water tower is usually found tucked away and used to supply individual water cranes (2 included with kit - Ratio Water Crane kit 212 is available if more are required). Water Crane and Fire Devil

Stations often had these Water Cranes at the end of the platforms so the locomotives could be refilled without detaching them from the train. Also included is a coke brazier, called a 'fire devil' to keep the cast iron pipe from freezing up during the winter. These cranes were usually supplied by a large water tank (see Ratio Water Tower kits 215, 256 and Loco Servicing Depot kit 206). A model of the station at Castle Cary, Somerset. Although of typically GWR design, it can be adapted to suit that of other railway companies. Engine Shed

Provide a home for your locos, giving them cover from the elements and a place for repairs and maintenance. It is normal to find a water tower (Ratio Water Tower 215 and Large Water Tower 256 kits), and coaling stage (Ratio Loco Servicing Depot Ref 206) nearby, and an inspection pit (Peco NB-56F) was also often included. Cattle Dock

A common feature of country stations large and small, whilst market town cattle docks could be very large indeed. Our model is of the one at Yeovil Pen Mill (GWR) Station, Somerset. Livestock (See Modelscene Cows Ref. 5179, Sheep and Lambs Ref. 5177, Pigs Ref. 5176, and Horses Ref. 5178) was conveyed on British railways until around 1973, although many cattle docks remained in place unused, becoming overgrown - an interesting scenic feature.
